Joseph Pancoast
Biography
Born in Burlington County, New Jersey. Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School with M.D. in 1828. Married Rebecca Abbott June 2, 1829. They had one son. He began teaching in 1831. He was elected Physician of the Philadelphia Hospital in 1834 and later Physician in Chief to the Children's Hospital. He was a visiting surgeon 1838 to 1845. In 1854 he was elected Surgeon of the Pennsylvania Hospital. He served on the 1875 Assay Commission. He died in Philadelphia.
Subject of medal (Julian PE-25) with dies by William Barber. The mint sold modern copies (USM 626). Julian states that the medals were struck because of the admiration of Pancoast by Mint Director James Pollock.
