Margaret Mackall (Smith) Taylor
Biography
Born as Margaret Smith in Calvert County, Maryland. Married Zachary Taylor on June 21, 1810. Their daughter Sarah married young Jefferson Davis but died three months later. Their son Richard served as a lieutenant general with the Confederate States of America.
She was a semi-invalid living on the second floor of the White House. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Taylor acted as official White House hostess.
Margaret died in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Margaret appears on the “First Spouse” $10 gold coin and corresponding bronze medal.
