Born in Appleton, Wisconsin. Received B.A. from University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, in 1975. Received masters degree in history from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh in 1986. Married to Rachel Marie Silver on May 31, 1975; divorced. Married to Sharon Ann Huber on September 18, 1993.
Employed with Krause Publications as managing editor of Numismatic News after 1987. Regular contributor of articles to Numismatic News, Bank Note Reporter and COINS magazine. Contributed the “Striking Impressions” feature to NN. Author of Striking Impressions: A Visual Guide to Collecting U.S. Coins published (1992); Twisted Tails (1995); Crime of 1873 (2001). Served on board of NLG 1998 to 2001.
He retired from Krause Publications January 5, 2018..
