George Washington Carver
Biography
Born near Diamond Grove, Missouri. Received B.S. from Iowa College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1894 and D.Sc. from Simpson College in 1928. Unmarried. Teacher at Tuskeegee Institute after 1896.
Carver did experiments in soil management. He recommended that peanuts should be planted in soil depleted by cotton. He developed hundreds of products using peanuts. He also worked with textile dies. He died at Tuskegee, Alabama.
Carver appears with Booker T. Washington on the Washington/Carver half dollars. Design was by Isaac Scott Hathaway. Silver was to come from the unsold and unstruck Washington Halves. It would be the last of the series of commemorative halves issued for private profit.
