Robert John Walker
Biography
Born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. Graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1819, first in his class. Admitted to Pittsburgh bar in 1821; practiced law. On April 4, 1825, married Mary Blechynden Bache, great-granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin and granddaughter of Alexander J. Dallas. They has eight children.
Elected to the U.S. Senate and served February 22, 1835, to March 5, 1849. He established an independent treasury system. He was responsible for creation of the Department of the Interior in 1849. He served as Governor of Kansas Territory April 10, 1857, to December 1857. Walker died in Washington D.C.
