Born in Washington, D. C. Graduated cum laude from Virginia Union University and received a B. D. from Yale University Divinity School. Served as pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church after 1958. Married to Dorothy Simms in 1967 with two children.
Served in the United States House of Representatives March 23, 1971 to January 3, 1991. Chair of the House Subcommittee on Historic Preservation and Coinage after 1977.
He disappeared from the United States in 2012 to 2016 to avoid prosecution for a bad check.
