Byron Nelson

Biography

Born near Waxahachie, Texas. Married to Louise Shofner in 1934.

He turned professional as a golfer in 1932. He won the Masters in 1937, the U. S. Open in 1939, the PGA Championshipin 1940 and 1945 and Masters in 1942.

Nelson had his best year in 1945, winning 11 tournaments in a row and 18 out of 30 played.

He died at home in Roanoke, Texas. A bill to present aCongressional GoldMedalwas proposedbeforehis death and passed threedays after his death. The obverse was sculpted by Norman Nemeth and reverse by Don Everhart.
