Abigail (Powers) Fillmore
Biography
Born Abigail Powers in Stillwater, New York. Wife of Millard Fillmore.
Abigail had an ankle injury that made it difficult to stand. Their daughter Abby occasionally served as first lady at formal events.
She caught pneumonia during the inauguration of Franklin Pierce and died in Washington, D.C.
She appears on the “First Spouse” $10 gold coin released March 18, 2010, and the corresponding bronze medal. The obverse was designed and sculpted by Phoebe Hemphill. Reverse was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Joseph F. Menna.
