Ira Gershwin

Biography

Born in New York City; older brother of George. Attended College of the City of New York 1914 to 1916. Married Leonore Strunsky September 14, 1926. Wrote early songs under the pseudonym Arthur Francis. Collaborated with his brother. He wrote lyrics for shows such as Of Thee I Sing 1932, Porgy and Bess 1935, An American in Paris 1952 and many others. After the death of his brother collaborated with Jerome Kern.

He died in Beverly Hills, California.
