National Archives description of Record Group 104, Entry 23:
Chiefly letters from and draft replies to Franklin Peale, who was variously Chief Coiner of the United States Mint, Assistant Assayer, Melter and Refiner, and an inventor of machinery used in the Mint Service. Included are reports of Peale's visits in the 1830's to certain European cities to study coining operations; a few letters signed by Rubens and Titian Peale; papers relating to Franklin Peale's claim for compensation for some of his inventions that were used by the mint; and a few letters from his widow. Like the "Boulton correspondence" described in entry 2, this series appears to have been formed from some of the correspondence described in entry 1. Arranged chronologically.

Correspondence primarily among Melter & Refiner Franklin Peale, Mint Directors Samuel Moore and Robert M. Patterson, and Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury. Photocopies from the Craig Sholley library, generally originating from the National Archives, record group 104, entry 23 (Peale correspondence), although some of the material may be from the general correspondence files (National Archives, record group 104, entries 1 and 3). The correspondence relates to acquisition and implementation of the steam press, purchase of a portrait lathe, and development of the 1836 gold pattern dollar, 1836 Gobrecht silver dollar, and 1836 steam press token.
