"Illegal to Own" Coins

(2020)

Multi-Media Summary

The U.S. Government has declared that certain coins are illegal to own, most famously the 1933 Double Eagle, but potentially many others as well. Foreign governments say that coins constituting "cultural property" may be subject to confiscation even if they are held in other countries. What are the legal issues behind such claims, and how can dealers and collectors protect themselves? Presenting: Armen Vartian, attorney for coin dealers and collectors for over 35 years. This presentation was part of the 2020 Newman Numismatic Portal Symposium, held virtually, August 28-30, 2020.
