By the early 19th century, the British conquest of India was almost complete. As officials of the East India Company fanned out across India, they discovered mysterious inscriptions carved on rocks and pillars all over India that nobody could read. The code to crack this mystery came from coins once issued the Northwestern parts of India and modern Afghanistan. The rediscovery of these scripts enabled scholars to identify the monarch who issued these edicts and rediscover a forgotten Empire.
