Book Summary

Well-Preserved Embossed Coin Plates Grässe, J.G.Th. HANDBUCH DER ALTEN NUMISMATIK VON DEN ÄLTESTEN ZEITEN BIS AUF CONSTANTIN D. GR. NACH DEN BESTEN QUELLEN BEARBEITET UND MIT VIELEN ABBILDUNGEN DER SCHÖNSTEN ANTIKEN ORIGINALMÜNZEN VERSEHEN ZUM SELBSTSTUDIUM FÜR FREUNDE DES ALTERTHUMS. Leipzig: Verlag von Ernst Schäfer, 1856. 8vo, later blue cloth, gilt. vi, 241, (1) pages; 72 attractive plates [bound slightly out of order] of ancient coins printed in metallic tints and in high relief on a dark gray ground, each with a leaf of descriptive text. Plates are well-preserved, with moderate toning and no corrosion. Near fine. One of the earliest works featuring embossed illustrations of ancient coins. The most prolific publisher and producer of the highest quality embossed coin books was Ernst Schäfer (later Moritz Schäfer), publisher in the 1850s of Grässe’s Handbuch, Fort’s Neueste Münzkunde, and Fliessbach’s Münzsammlung. His coin images are bright, crisp, and are astonishingly fine reproductions of actual coins. The dies were produced by an electrotype process. This is apparently the second edition of this charming production, and is seldom offered.
