Reed, Fred
Born in Chicago. Attended The Commercial Art Academy of Cincinnati. Married to Betty N. Franks October 15, 1939. They had a daughter. Employed as free lance designer 1935 to 1946; with U. S. Steel Fabricators, Inc. 1946 to 1950; writer and illustrater with Gerstenslager Company 1950 to 1960; with Rubbermaid 1960 to 1961.
He wrote a column "Money Clips" syndicated in 600 newspapers 1966 to 1975. Staff illustrator with Coin World after 1962. He wrote the "Odd and Curious" column for Coin World 1962 to 1964 and "Coinology" 1964 to 1987. He also contributed the “Americana” and “NUMISTopicals” features. He received the NLG award as best columnist in 1973. He served on the Assay Commission for 1975. Served on the ANA board of governors 1975 to 1979.
Author of Cowles Complete Encyclopedia of U. S. Coins in 1969 @ $7.95. Author of Encyclopedia of U.S. Coins published in 1972. Author of Coins: An Investor's and Collector's Guide published in 1973 at $10.00. Author of The Complete Coin Collector in 1976 at $14.95. Author and illustrator of Odd and Curious in 1979 at $7.00. Author of Coinology in 1985 at $4.50.
He died in Wooster, Ohio.
