Rothert, Matthew "Matt"

Born in Huntingburg, Indiana. Received B.S. from the University of Notre Dame in 1924. Resident of Camden, Arkansas, after 1929. Married to Janet Hope Firring April 10, 1937. They had two daughters and two sons. Employed as a furniture manufacturer. He was president of Camden Furniture Company and retired in 1975. He served on the Camden school board and the board of the National Association of Manufacturers. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.

In November 1953 he wrote to Secretary of the Treasury George Humphrey and other lawmakers. His letters asked for the motto "In God We Trust" to appear on all U. S. coins and paper money. As the result of his efforts a law was passed and signed by President Eisenhower July 11, 1955.

He was life member 219 of the ANA. He served as second vice president 1957 to 1961, on the board of governors 1961 to 1963, first vice president 1963 to 1965 and as 34th ANA President August 28, 1965, to August 12, 1967. He received the ANA Medal of Merit in 1960 and Farran Zerbe Memorial Award in 1973. He was a charter member and past president of the Arkansas Numismatic Society. He served as chairman of the Assay Commission for 1963. In 1964 he received the Nathan Gold Memorial Award. His collection was sold at auction by Bowers and Ruddy November 16-17, 1973. Author of A Guide Book of United States Fractional Currency in 1963. Issue price was $1. Author of Arkansas Obsolete Notes and Scrip in 1985 @ $15. The book won an NLG award in 1986. It was one of the series published by the SPMC.

He designed his own tombstone. At the top appear the words, "In God We Trust". In 2006, he was inducted into the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.  In 2018 he was inducted into the SPMC Hall of Fame.
