Winter, Douglas

Born in New York City. Received B.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1981. Married to Irma Kane-Winter (previously married on February 28, 1987 to Kerrin Smith).

Cataloger with Heritage Rare Coin Galleries 1982 to 1985. Since 1985 he has operated as Douglas Winter Consulting. He has cataloged sales for Christie's, Mid- American, Sotheby's and Superior. Some of the important catalogs he contributed to include the 1982 ANA sale, the Ebsen collection (1987), Lee collection (1988) and Blevins collection (1988).

In 1976 he received the Debbie Jane Gould Literary Award for an article written when he was a "Young Numismatist." Winter has contributed articles to COINage Magazine, Coin World, Legacy and other numismatic publications. He is the author of Charlotte Mint Gold Coins, 1838-1861 in 1987, How to Collect and Invest in Rare U. S. Coins in 1991 and New Orleans Gold Coins 1839-1906 published in 1992. He has also been a contributor to several books on U. S. coinage.

He received the NLG Clemmy Award in 2019. In 2021 he was on the Coin World list of The Most Influential People in Numismatics 1960-2020. He made the list again in 2022.
