Incised.  Cut into; carved, engraved or inscribed into a surface with a sharp instrument. Incised designs imply a removing of material to form lettering, symbols, or devices that are sunken below the surface as in flat engraving. The term is opposite of raised. Incised is cut into, it differs slighted from incuse, which means stamped into (a metal surface).  See incuse, intaglio, sunken relief, relief.

Incised Relief.  The background or field projects slightly in front of the design; also

called sunken relief or intaglio. Pratt's Indian design for the U.S. half and

quarter eagle ($5 & $2 1/2) gold coins of 1908 are incised relief.  See relief.
