Oak Leaf

Oak Leaf.  A component of a decoration usually bestowed in place of the decoration for a second, third, or more, instance; a higher class; or special citation. A palm leaf

or star is a similar component. They are oftentimes worn on the ribbon drape of the decoration, or on a separate ribbon bar. A British decoration with an oak leaf indicates a special citation was granted for gallantry.  See bar, clasp, star, decorations.
