Ocho reales

The standard silver coin of Spain and its American colonies. The first dollar-sized coin of the Americas was minted in 1538 at the new Mexico City mint, housed in the Hernan Cortes residence, it was a Carlos-Juana, Early Series. This coin could be the first 8 reales of all the Spanish empire, because Spains first 8-reales coins may have been struck after 1538. Over centuries this coin acquired many names: real de a ocho, (in Spain) patacn, patagn, peso duro and peso fuerte.
