Early Paper Money of America / Connecticut / 1709 July 12 redated May 1713 (Scroll)
£20,000 in indented Bills of Credit authorized by the May 1713 and June 1713 Acts to replace all prior issues because of the extensive practice of raising denominations by alteration. The July 12, 1709 plates were modified by adding "May 1713" below the original date, by engraving the denomination in script over the lower part of the face scroll on the top border, by placing a picture of a different animal on each denomination, and by writing the name of a different color on each denomination on the great plate. The AR monogram was used on bills from the great plate. The bills from the small plate were in black. The monogram, name of the color, animal and signatures were to be in the designated color on the bills from the great plate. On the back of the four highest denominations the use of a scroll was continued, but on the back of the four lowest denominations a typeset text in a decorated frame was printed. All prior bills were to be replaced by November 1714 but this date was extended successively to June 1, 1721. Signers were William Allyn, John Eliot, John Haynes, Richard Lord, William Pitkin, Joseph Tallcott, William Whiting, and Hezekiah Wyllys.
