Description [back] The Parting Room U.S. Mint, Philadelphia. During this time, circa 1903, the Mint separated gold from silver by treating the bullion with nitric acid, which dissolved the silver and left the gold. This solution was then treated with salt water and zinc, thus separating the silver. Today the Mint purchases the majority of their coinage metals in prefabricated strips.
