Description | [back] MILLING AND COINING ROOM United States Mint, Philadelphia. In 1836, a new steam powered milling machine was placed in service at the Mint. The new milling machine was used to "upset" or raise, a rim around the coin. Edge lettering was discontinued and the reeding was applied during the coining process. |
