Description | [back] Stamping Gold Coins U.S. Mint, Philadelphia. Coinage production at the time this photograph was taken, circa 1903, required a large amount of human assistance. Coin blanks were fed by hand into a tube at the front of the press; from there they were transferred between the dies for striking. Gold coins were produced using 35 to 155 tons of pressure and at a rate of approximately 90 pieces per minute. |
