Description | (1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 70G. 20C. MS61 NGC. CAC. K-13, R.6. Kagin-13 is the only seventh series quarter eagle issued by Christopher Bechtler, and it is rare in all grades. Bechtler gold pieces were renowned for their high gold content, as well as the weight and fineness inscriptions in the design, and circulated extensively. Melting, wear, and other forms of attrition reduced the surviving population. The present Mint State coin is one of only 15 pieces certified by NGC in all grades (8/17). The strike is even and well-centered, and the legends are fully brought up. Yellow-gold surfaces show semiprooflike reflectivity in the fields despite minor handling marks that limit the grade. The reverse is rotated noticeably counter-clockwise. Census: 2 in 61, 6 finer. CAC: 2 in 61, 3 finer (8/17). Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Newman IX, November 2017, lot 15110, realized $21600. Images and description courtesy of Heritage Auctions. |
