1853 10C No Arrows MS67 NGC. Fortin-101a. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. A Top 100 Seated dime variety. The obverse exhibits heavy clash marks near the drapery and on both sides of Liberty's head. The Mint Act of February 21, 1853 was long overdue. Today it is difficult to imagine the federal government having as much collective mental anguish as it did in 1853 about lowering the silver content of the dime, quarter, and half dollar. Nevertheless, the act did pass and it had the desired effect: To once again place U.S. coinage in the channels of commerce. Neil Carothers wrote a masterful book that told the story of the passage of the Act in his 1930 Fractional Money. This is an exemplary dime struck before the silver reduction of the Act. The mint luster is exceptional and brightly shines through the multiple layers of purple, lime-green, and blue toning seen over each side. The strike details are pinpoint-sharp throughout.
