1873-S 25C Arrows MS64 NGC. After the mid-April 1873 switch to the Arrows style of coinage, San Francisco struck 156,000 examples of the 1873-S quarters. The 1873-S Arrows quarters circulated extensively in the hard-money West, where a dollar was gold or silver, not paper. The average certified example is XF40 to XF45. Mint State examples are rare. The present Newman Collection near-Gem is a coin of high quality in a grade that is seldom seen and nearly unsurpassed -- NGC has seen 10 submissions (likely not all separate coins) in MS64, and only one MS65 is finer there (10/13). PCGS shows a single Gem coin, but we show no record of it ever trading at public auction. Generous luster on this piece complements dappled surfaces comprising gold, pink, and lavender hues. The strike verges on full. A rim defect at 9:30 on the reverse is as made. Original quality and spectacular eye appeal. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
