1866 25C Motto PR68 S NGC. The upswell in religious sentiment during and after the Civil War led to placement of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on America's coinage, beginning with the two cent pieces which debuted in 1864. The With Motto silver denominations, dime through silver dollar, were each made in the amount of 725 pieces. The present PR68 S example is numerically tied with one other non-Star coin at NGC for the title of finest certified (10/13). The overall appearance of this coin, as noted previously, shows spectacular surface colors and preservation indicating long-term, careful album storage; we can well imagine enthusiastic collectors may want to bid aggressively on multiple Seated quarter proofs from this era, in the hopes of obtaining not one, but a run of prized jewels from the inimitable Newman Collection.
