1870 25C PR67+ S Cameo NGC. CAC. This piece is remarkable technically and aesthetically, a coin with coloration consistent with that of the other Newman Collection quarters from this era. Such a run of splendid, super high-grade proof Seated quarters has been a high point for this cataloger, memorable even among all the other rarities within the Newman Collection and other Heritage Signature auctions. We have commented before on the unusual consistency in appearance (and grade, for that matter) of the Newman coins. In general, the Seated quarter proofs show deeper toning on the obverse than on the reverse. However, the obverses as a group -- and the reverses as another group -- are recognizably all of a kind. We have long been a lover of beautiful toning on silver coins, and the Newman Collection has served only to reinforce our belief that most original, unaltered silver coins from the mid- to late 19th century, and well into the 20th century, will exhibit colorful patina. This is particularly evident from the similar appearance of the Newman proofs, which have clearly been stored in identical circumstances that have produced near-identical patina on the surfaces of each piece.
