Description 1879 25C PR67 S NGC. CAC. Type Two Reverse. The 1879 proof Seated Liberty quarter claims a generous mintage of 1,100 pieces, but this delightful Superb Gem is the finest-certified survivor. Well-known numismatist A.M. Smith acquired a hoard of leftover proof sets from the late 1870s and early 1880s that he purchased from the Mint for face value every year. The hoard was finally liquidated around 1935 by M.H. Bolender and Wayte Raymond, providing many of the finer coins numismatists know about today. A fully struck and attractive piece, this coin displays well-preserved surfaces with attractive dabs of golden-olive and ice-blue toning on the obverse, with a brilliant silver center and amber rims on the reverse. Eye appeal is tremendous. Census: 10 in 67 (1 in 67 S), 0 finer (10/13). Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $7,637.50 . Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.
