Description 1890 25C PR68 S NGC. By 1890 the demand for new circulating silver led to a noticeable upturn in the mintages of Seated halves and quarters, in particular. Those series had each seen low productions for the better part of a decade. But in 1890 the circulating quarter production was 80,000 pieces, up from 12,000 the previous year. Proofs dated 1890, however, saw an especially meager manufacture of 590 coins. This PR68 S NGC example shows concentric obverse patina, but the reverse, rather than having a silver center, shows beautiful lavender toning. The strike is well-executed in the centers of each side; the slightest weakness shows on most of the obverse stars. Census: 6 in 68 (1 in 68 S), 1 finer (10/13). Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $15,275.00 . Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.
