1796 10C MS66+ NGC. CAC. JR-1, R.1. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. There are seven different die varieties known for the first year of issue dimes and six of the seven varieties are known in Mint State grades. The JR-1 die marriage is listed first in the standard reference, although its order of striking is unknown. The Eric P. Newman specimen is a sensational example with eye appeal that is second to none, exhibiting gorgeous olive-gray patina on the devices with vivid orange, violet, and steel toning nearer the borders. Heavy clash marks are noted in the fields of this piece that is the same die state as the MS64 Ed Price coin that we sold five years ago. The Newman specimen ranks high in the condition census. NGC has chosen the Newman coin to illustrate the 1796 dime on their NGC Coin Explorer website. Nearly all known examples of JR-1 have a heavy rim break that partially covers star 1. A small number of pieces are known from a perfect obverse die, and those are invariably in low grades. Most survivors are middle die state pieces with the rim break covering two points of star 1, and with moderate clash marks in the obverse fields.
