1846 50C Tall Date MS65 NGC. WB-106. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Tall Date 1846 halves are scarcer than their Medium Date counterparts, and both types are exceptionally difficult to locate in mint condition in spite of a mintage in excess of 2.2 million pieces. The scarcity of Tall Date halves is underscored by examining the Census Report from NGC. This is the only Gem they have certified. Prior to the certification of the Eric P. Newman Collection, only two pieces were finer, both MS66; now there is an MS67 (see next lot). This piece displays thick mint luster beneath layers of gray and blue toning.
