1846 50C Tall Date MS67 NGC. WB-106. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The 1846 Seated Liberty half dollar claims a substantial mintage of more than 2.2 million pieces, with eight major die varieties identified in the Wiley-Bugert series reference. This coin exhibits the large normal date that identifies the WB-106 variety. The WB-106 is a High R.6 issue in Mint State grades. The 1846 Seated Liberty half is rarely available at the Gem level and, in MS67, this 1846 Tall Date is one of the most significant coins in the entire run of Eric P. Newman half dollars. It is the only MS67 specimen certified at either of the grading services. The reason for the extraordinarily high grade of this piece is immediately apparent. The mint luster is thick and frosted, with slight semi-reflectivity seen in the fields on each side. Like the MS65 example above, the strike is full on this coin. The centers of each side are generally brilliant with rings of russet and blue around the peripheries. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $6.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
