Bill Bugert notes in A Register of Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume I, San Francisco Branch Mint, that the WB-31 is the first use of both obverse and reverse dies for this variety. Raised die rust lumps appear over the entire obverse, and the reverse shows a weak olive leaf disconnected from the others, weak tail feathers below the shield, and diagonal die lines running southwest to northeast through WE on the scroll. This top-notch Premium Gem 1877-S boasts excellent eye appeal, displaying generous mint luster and intermingled gold, olive, silver, ochre, and amber patina with a uniformly bold strike.
