Description 1807 50C Draped Bust MS62+ NGC. O-101, R.5. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The Draped Bust design was retired partway through the year in 1807, but a substantial mintage of 301,076 pieces was achieved before the design change took place. Eleven die varieties are known for the date, including the R.7 1807 O-115 (4 known). The 1807 O-101 is next in line for rarity. The Newman coin appears to be the finest known specimen of the O-101 variety. The coin is well-detailed and brightly lustrous, with mottled shades of sea-green, silver-gray, and amber toning on both sides. Striking weakness is limited to the eagle's head. A few minor contact marks can be detected on close inspection, none worthy of individual mention. For the advanced collector of early half dollar varieties, this lot represents an important opportunity. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $8.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $12,925.00 . Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.
