1820/19 50C Square Base 2 MS64 NGC. O-101, R.2. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The 1820 Capped Bust half dollar claims a small mintage of 751,122 pieces, with only eight die varieties known for the date. Two of the most popular varieties are the overdates, O-101 (Square Base 2, the present coin) and O-102 (Curl Base 2). Six varieties of 1820 half dollars are listed on page 196 of the 2014 Guide Book, with the O-101 bringing a premium over all types but the rare O-107 (No Serifs on E's). We know of only two Gem examples. The Newman coin is a worthy aspirant to spots three through five in the Condition Census. The coin offered here is an attractive Choice example, with sharply detailed design elements and the remnants of the undertype digits plainly visible below the primary numerals. The well-preserved surfaces show none of the clash marks and die breaks often seen on Capped Bust half dollars, and no mentionable signs of contact are evident. This coin shows the vibrant mint luster and classic toning pattern that are hallmarks of this collection, with colorful rings of pink and gold surrounding brilliant silver centers.
