1824 50C Overdate MS61 NGC. O-103, R.1. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The "jumble of recuttings" (Overton's words) variety with a Gordian Knot of digits underlying and surrounding the 4 in the date. A satiny and unmarked representative with lightly toned fields and motifs, though the margins offer rich navy-blue, ruby-red, and sun-gold patina, indicia of album storage. Al Overton's set piece is a true Gem. It garnered an MS65 grade at NGC in 1993 and is the plate coin in the latest editions of his standard reference. This cataloguer had the pleasure of examining that coin in its raw state with hopes that a pristine example might give up the secret of what lay below the 4 in the date. It was an exasperating exercise in futility. It seems that arguments exist for nominating every digit, 0 through 9, as part of underlying jumble. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R.
