1828 50C Square Base 2, Small 8, Large Letters MS61 NGC. O-122, R.3. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The O-122 variety is usually identified by a significant break in the rim between stars 5 and 6. In this extremely early die state the incipient break merely blurs a few dentils. We've not seen an earlier die state on the O-122. The obverse die also appears on the rare (R.5+) 1828 O-123. Students of the series have determined that the earliest and latest state of the obverse die appear on the O-123, meaning that it was first used on the O-123, then on the O-122 and then "remarried" to the O-123. Sharply detailed in most areas, this Mint State specimen shows a little flatness on some of the stars. Mint luster, though subdued by the patina of golden-brown, gray, and amber, is undisturbed. The lovely surfaces are virtually free of marks. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $4.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
