1836 50C Lettered Edge MS65 NGC. CAC. O-104a, R.3. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The year 1836 saw the final coinage of the Lettered Edge type, with a huge output of 6.5 million half dollars accomplished before giving way to the new Reeded Edge design. Twenty three die varieties are known for the date and this coin is an example of the O-104 variety, with a recut 1 in the date and the left side of I in PLURIBUS aligned with the left side of the second T in STATES. On this specimen an extensive die crack more or less encircles the central design on the reverse, identifying the scarce late die state O-104a. Stephen Herrman lists one example of O-104 in MS66 condition in his auction survey, and four appearances of the O-104a in MS65, which actually represent only two separate coins. This spectacular Gem is thus tied with two other pieces for the second spot in the Condition Census for the variety. The design elements exhibit sharp definition throughout and the surfaces show no mentionable distractions. The outstanding visual feature of this coin is the natural iridescent toning that enlivens the surfaces in shades of golden-brown, cerulean-blue, and silver-gray.
