1839 50C Drapery MS64 NGC. CAC. WB-102. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design was altered in 1839, when Robert Ball Hughes added some folds of drapery to Liberty's elbow and slightly reduced the size of the rock to balance metal flow in the striking process. The Drapery half dollar type is slightly more available than its No Drapery predecessor, but it is still a rare issue in Mint State. This attractive Choice example displays remarkably bright mint luster, with mostly brilliant centers and occasional dabs of sea-green and amber patina. Traces of golden-brown and deep blue toning are scattered around the margins. The design elements are sharply defined throughout. Census: 15 in 64 (1 in 64+), 4 finer (10/13). Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $7.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
