Denomination 50C
Description 1842 50C Medium Date, Large Letters MS65 NGC. WB-105, FS-301. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. NGC has certified only this single 1842 Medium Date half dollar of this variety as MS65 with none higher; it is also the plate coin from NGC's 1842 Medium Date half dollar Coin Explorer. Pleasing crescent moon-shaped blue and gold toning covers silvery fields on both the obverse and reverse. There are only minuscule marks in the coin's fields, barely worthy of mention. This variety shows the digits 842 slightly repunched north one above the other three times. The reverse displays interesting and extensive die cracks, typical of this die marriage. The same die marriage as the previous lot, but a slightly earlier die state. The finest example certified of this rarity. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $7.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $7,931.25 . Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.
