1842 50C Small Date, Large Letters MS62 NGC. CAC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. NGC has certified only three 1842 half dollars of this type with a mere five higher. The Small Date is the scarcer of the two date sizes for 1842. Attractive blue and gold peripheral toning covers lustrous fields. There are a few minor scuffs in the fields consistent with the grade, but they are not distracting by any means. A reverse die crack from the rim through the M into the eagle characterizes this die; in late die states, the crack completely bisects the reverse die. This variety is rare in mint condition, even more so with this lovely toning. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $7.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
