1853-O 50C Arrows and Rays AU58 NGC. WB-101. The New Orleans Arrows and Rays half dollar is significantly scarcer than its Philadelphia counterpart. In part this is because the mintage was much smaller (1.3 million pieces struck), but more importantly because of the need for circulating small denomination coinage in the South. This piece was apparently selected for its clean overall surfaces. It also displays deep mauve-blue toning over each side. The strike is a bit soft on the star centers and uppermost portion of Liberty's head; elsewhere the design elements are sharply detailed. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
