1856/56-O 50C Recut 56 MS65+ NGC. CAC. WB-103, VP-002. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. This high-end Gem shows the 56 in the date recut slightly north, with the undertype showing below the upper serif of the 5 and below the knob of the 6, identifying the WB-103 variety. The WB-103 is the most challenging variety of the date, rated High R.7 in Mint State grades by Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert. NGC has certified five examples of the WB-103 (VP-002) under their Variety Plus program, with the only other Mint State piece grading MS62. This coin is the finest certified specimen of the WB-103 by far, as PCGS has also graded five examples, none finer than MS62 (9/13). The coin offered here is well-detailed and lustrous, with smoky gray toning and occasional highlights of champagne-gold. Close inspection with a loop reveals no mentionable distractions. We expect intense competition from series specialists when this lot is called. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a.
