1861-S 50C MS65 NGC. CAC. WB-101. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. A substantial mintage of 939,500 Seated Liberty half dollars was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1861, during the first year of the Civil War. This coin exhibits the large mintmark that identifies the WB-101 variety. The WB-101 is a High R.5 issue in Mint State, and examples in MS65 condition are very rare. This delightful Gem displays sharply detailed design elements throughout, with well-preserved surfaces that show highlights of gray and golden-brown toning. Traces of mint luster shine through the patina, adding to the strong visual appeal. Census: 2 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (9/13). Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
