1862-S 50C MS64 NGC. CAC. WB-101, Die State WB-5, R.2. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. This 1862-S half dollar is an example of the Large S style mintmark, one of three used during the year -- also including the Medium and Small wide broken S -- and the loops of the 6 in the date feature several styles, called today Weak, Damaged, Broken, and Repaired. This piece is the Weak Loop variant, showing a thin, barely-there arc at the top of the 6's bottom oval-shaped loop. Die marks in Liberty's gown also diagnose this interesting variety. This near-Gem boasts excellent luster over a melange of dove-gray, olive, gold, and amber areas, with a couple of smoke-gray areas. Census: 5 in 64, 1 finer (9/13). Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $12.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
