1857 50C PR64 Cameo NGC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Prior to 1858, the mintage of proofs was sporadic. Reliable records also were not kept for proofs, or "master coins" as they were called in the earlier years of the Mint. Speculation from older sources was on the low side with somewhere around a dozen pieces believed known. Today we estimate that somewhere between 25 and 45 proof 1857 half dollars are extant. Very few, however, are known with cameo contrast such as seen on this piece. The fields are deeply mirrored on each side with noticeably contrasting frosted devices. Most of each side is brilliant with thin concentric rings of russet and blue around the margins. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a.
