1870 50C PR67 NGC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The 1870 proof half dollar saw a generous mintage of 1,000 pieces, a relatively large number of which have survived to the present. NGC and PCGS have graded close to 330 examples, mostly PR62 to PR64. The finest certified in any proof finish are three NGC-graded Superb Gems (9/13), including the present offering. Golden-brown and sky-blue patina around the margins highlights the central devices, most noticeably on the obverse. Boldly struck design elements and well preserved surfaces enhance the coin's pleasing eye appeal. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $8.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
