Description 1873 50C No Arrows, Closed 3, PR66 Cameo NGC. WB-102. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Early in 1873, Chief Coiner A. Louden Snowden complained that the Closed 3 punch used to impress the date on the year's coinage looked too much like an 8. Mint Director James Pollock ordered the numeral changed to an Open 3 style sometime prior to April 1, 1873. Thus, the Closed 3 in the date confirms that this coin was struck during the first three months of 1873 for inclusion in the proof sets. The weight of the quarter was increased slightly in July of 1873, and a pair of arrowheads was added to the design, one on either side of the date, to signify this change. Of course, the coin offered here represents the earlier No Arrows type. The estimated mintage of 1873 proof No Arrows, Closed 3 half dollars was a meager 600 pieces. The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with richly frosted devices that contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, but just a touch of softness shows on the eagle's claw and arrow feathers. Vivid shades of violet and sea-green toning enhance the pleasing surfaces, with most of the color at the rims. Census: 19 in 66, 3 finer (9/13). Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $8.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $7,050.00 .
