1929-D 50C MS65 NGC. CAC. After 1921, commercial half dollar production was a branch-mint-only affair until 1934 and there were two three-year hiatuses in that stretch. The 1929-D issue was struck just before the start of the second hiatus and its output barely crossed the million-coin mark. This Gem example, pleasingly detailed on Liberty's head and branch hand, has softly frosted luster swirling beneath blue and gold overtones. A band of deep amber descends through the first T in STATES and well into the nearby eagle's wing, stopping just short of the neck. Census: 79 in 65 (2 in 65+), 16 finer (9/13). Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
